Choosing SS 316
For coastal equipment, port-related projects and chemical-service assemblies, identify the actual exposure conditions before selecting a fastener. SS 316 contains molybdenum and is generally more resistant to chloride attack than 304, but it can still corrode under unsuitable conditions.
A4 is a fastener material group commonly associated with 316-type compositions. A4-80 is a separate combination of material group and strength class. Do not assume every SS 316 product meets A4-80 or that 316 and 316L are interchangeable.
Specification and documentation
Send the product standard, exact material grade, dimensions, thread pitch and quantity. If you require a test certificate, specified strength class or traceability, include it in the enquiry so availability can be checked before purchase. The general grade guide does not certify a particular batch.
